Dr. Bascomb has an apartment conveniently located across the street from the courthouse where Maxwell Smart is due to testify and is prevailed upon to let Max stay with him for security purposes.
Max introduces Dr. Bascomb to his landlady Mrs. Macklin as "Mr. Pepperfeathers" when they encounter each other at Max's apartment but it is not clear whether this is a standing alias or something Max makes up on the spot. "Mr. Pepperfeathers" is supposedly in charge of births and bereavements at the greeting card company which Max claims as his place of employment.
